Rice is one of the most important agricultural products in the world, not only in terms of food but also in terms of production volume. Straw, which is an agricultural by product of rice production, is also generated in large quantities, but has not been effectively used. Most straw is used for land filling or is burned, resulting in environmental issues in Japan. In recent years, there have been several attempts to devise efficient uses for rice straw as a lignocellulosic biomass (Pan et al., 1999; Wang et al., 2007; El-Zawawy et al., 2011; Oberoi et al., 2012).
