Description of the program
The program described in this paper is a seven-day intensive Englishcourse for juniors in the science and technology division of a large Japanese university. Begun in 2004, the program is a two-creditelective. Interested students apply in March and are selected for theprogram based on their sophomore grades and their most recent TOEFL score. (All students take an institutional TOEFL test inDecember or January of their sophomore year.) In 2006, seventy-fivestudents applied; sixty-five—the maximum number—were selected.
