Babe Ruth was as prodigious an eater and drinker as he was a hitter. On Opening Day 1925, Ruth wasn’t in the lineup but laid up in a New York City hospital undergoing surgery for a reported intestinal abscess. The cause of the malady was never revealed but New York newspapers reported it was due to Ruth gorging himself on hot dogs and drowning himself in beer. Sportswriters dubbed it “The Bellyache Heard ’Round the World,” and it kept the “Bambino” sidelined for nearly two months.
