As of the 2001 census, the population is primarily composed of mestizo people4
(59.4% of the total population) and various Mayans groups5
. Although there are some who self-identify as indigenous and are in powerful economical positions, poverty does disproportionately affect
the indigenous community.6
As poverty and access to health care are also correlated, it is
important to give special consideration to the indigenous population (Adams and Hawkins,
2007).
