The Rakhine is a nationality in Burma forming the majority along the coastal region of present day Rakhine State. Arakanese people also live in the southeastern parts of Bangladesh, especially in Chittagong and Barisal Divisions.
Their Lives: Rakhine culture revolves around the planting and harvesting of rice. Fresh as well as saltwater fishing are major industries. The working class is severely underpaid due to high unemployment. The whole extended family lives together under one roof. Women play an active role in family decision making. Traditionally, when a couple marries, they move in with the wife's family.
Culture: The Arakanese are predominantly Theravada Buddhists and are one of the four main Buddhist ethnic groups of Burma.
