Reading skills
Skills in reading can be classified based on the reading strategies as follows:
1. Skimming.
Skimming is a type of reading which is use to overview the entire text to get a general idea or gist of what it is about or the writer's attitude, such as looking for something to read in a library.
2. Scanning.
Scanning is a type of speed reading technique which used when readers want to find specific information without necessarily understanding the rest of text or passage. For example, when readers are looking at a bus time-table to find out the time of the bus they want, they are scanning.
3. Reference skill.
Reference skill is a type of reading which is used to locate the information that readers want from a systematic organized text, such as finding words on pages in a dictionary.
4. Predicting.
Predicting is a type of reading which is used when readers guess the meaning of a word while reading. The prediction might be based on knowledge of the world and knowledge of language too.
5. Deducing the Meaning of Unfamiliar Words.
This skill is a type of reading which is used ignore the word that readers do not know and that words do not affect the meaning of the text.
