Extrinsic FOS consist of input and output fibres carrying
light to and from a light modulator which modulates the light
beam upon been activated by an environmental signal. Therefore
the fibre is only used as a light carrier and do not interfere with
the interaction between the light and target measurand. Depending
on the transduction mechanisms used, a variety of physical
and chemical sensors can be developed which have potential
applications in a wide range of industries. Recent work by some of
the authors have highlighted the practise and potential of optical
fibre sensing technology to address various industrial applications.
These work have included:
Use of multimode optical fib
