CM programs have been found to have positive effects on various outcomes in patients with schizophrenia(4,9,10)• Cochrane reviewers evaluated 40 randomized controlled trials involving 7,524 participants with severe mental illnessand found very low- to moderate-quality evidence that intensive CM (ICM; i.e., a CM model that involves provision of24-hour-per-day support service needs over an indefinite period by a team with a relatively small group of clients [usuallyfewer than 20]) reduces hospitalization, increases retention in care, and globally improves social function compared tostandard care. They were unable to determine if ICM was more effective than non-intensive CM(4)• In a retrospective study, investigators analyzed the use of a Continuity-of-Care Program (CCP), a clinical CM model, among 250 patients with schizophrenia in three community mental health service facilities in Madrid, Spain. The CCPmodel led to a 40–69% reduction in hospital admissions, duration of each hospital stay, proportion of admitted patients, total number of in-hospital days, proportion of patients visiting the emergency department, and number of emergency roomvisits. This reduction was maintained over 3 successive years(9)
