intensity of lipid peroxidation by measuring concentrations
of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances
(TBARS) and protein carbonyl content (PCC) were
determined. The obtained values of the given indicators
were expressed per liter of blood. The activity of total
glutathione peroxidase (T-GSH-Px), selenium-dependent
glutathione peroxidase (Se-GSH-Px) and seleniumindependent
glutathione peroxidase (non-Se-GSH-Px)
with TBARS and PCC concentrations were measured
in samples of seminal plasma. In sperm cell samples,
the activity of Se-GSH-Px and concentrations of
TBARS and PCC were also determined. The obtained
results were expressed in grams of proteins.
2.3.1. Measurement of glutathione peroxidase
Activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px; E.C. 1.
11. 1. 9.) was measured using test kits manufactured by
Randox (RANSEL, Ireland) with an automatic analyzer
Saba 18 (AMS, Italy). GSH-Px catalyzes glutathione oxidation
(GSH) with hydrogen peroxide and cumene hydroperoxide.
In the presence of glutathione reductase and
NADPH, the oxidized form of glutathione (GSSG) immediately
converts to its reduced form with simultaneous
