The traditional theory of a liberal education has defined well education intended for the intellectual formation of the individual for its own sake, that is, intellectual education for the purpose of personal growth as distinct from some ulterior end such as getting a job. Not only is this theory normally considered to exclude physical education, but also historically it did not include education for emotional growth, moral formation, engaging in action, or for specialized, vocational, or professional formation. For these reasons the traditional ideal represents a more limited form of education than one providing a general or all round formation of the individual even if this was often claimed on its behalf.
