Older adults with a more sedentary lifestyle may not be highly motivated because they have fewer communication challenges as they have less opportunity to interact with a variety of communication partners and within a variety of listening environments. Adults who are still active within the work force often have a higher motivation for hearing-loss remediation, which can be increased even further through demonstration of potential benefit. The same is often true for large numbers of older adults who, though retired, still enjoy an active life and continue to have high demands on their hearing. With all older adults, our strongest ally in this arena is the high value they place on personal autonomy and independence. Even so, with many, motivation to proceed on our recommendations may be lacking. Certainly most audiologists have had the experience of fitting hearing aids on an individual whose family members held all die motivation.
