Make the other person feel felt: Sometimes people’s feelings are needed to connect, the middle level of the brain, and need to think that they are heard. Anger, fear, happiness, sadness, frustration, and other emotions need to be sympathized with and understand where the other person is emotionally. Acknowledging the other person’s feelings can help the most resistant person feel identified with. In each case of difficult communication, look behind the façade and put yourself in the other person’s shoes. Once you do, you can change the dynamics of the relationship. That can lead to cooperation, communication, and obtain buy in on working together on things, rather than against each other. When you mirror a person, they are inclined to mirror you.
