Nitrogen uptake and symbiont control in the coral
holobiont
The coral holobiont is highly efficient in the assimilation of
nitrogen. Heterotrophic feeding by the coral can meet a
large part of its nitrogen requirements if sufficient food is
available [24]. In addition, corals acquire nutrients from
their symbiotic algae from the genus Symbiodinium. This
symbiotic relationship forms the foundation of coral holobionts
and shallow-water coral reefs. In this association,
the phototrophic dinoflagellates provide photosynthates to
