I have chosen professional engineer

I have chosen professional engineering as my course of tertiary study in 2005. I will decide which type of engineering to pursue after an Intermediate year at the University of Canterbury. There are a number of reasons why I want to be a professional engineer and I have a number of academic ambitions and interests pertaining to a career in engineering.

Firstly, I have always been fascinated at how things work and operate, and how they are built. As a young child, I always loved Lego and was involved in a national competition in which I was placed second when I was seven years old. This early interest in Lego and in how things “work” has always served as some indication to me that I would suit a career in engineering of some kind.

I also have a great love of the outdoors and frequently use the environment for leisure activities such as fishing, boating and picnicking. Nearly all forms of engineering modify the environment in some way. In this sense, all professional engineers have a weighty responsibility, even more so today because of the increasing pressure our activities place on the natural environment. Engineers find solutions to a wide range of these problems and create a balance between technological developments and environmental protection. I have a great desire to be involved with the environment after gaining an engineering degree, whether it be in fields such as civil or natural resources engineering.

Society’s need to use natural resources in a truly sustainable way is becoming increasingly obvious. These fields of engineering mentioned, address real world environmental issues and provide insight into current ecological and sustainable technologies available for addressing these issues. They also seek to improve or maintain the sustainability of natural resource use through the design and wise application of engineering and technology. I want to play some part in this by becoming a professional engineer.

My late grandfather James Rodney Fougère was a civil engineer in South Canterbury over a period of approximately forty years and held most of the offices in the South Canterbury Branch of the Institute of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ). He was a member of IPENZ for around fifty years and became a fellow in about 1965. Talking to my grandfather gave me even more desire to become a professional engineer myself. My father, a geographer, is also head of Social Sciences at Palmerston North Boys’ High. His interest in human use of the environment and related issues has also sparked my interest in resource management.

As part of my NCEA Level 3 Geography course this year, I carried out a planning investigation into the proposed recreational lake in the Manawatu region. This investigation enabled me to understand some of the procedures involved in making decisions relating to environmental concerns, including engineering issues such as river and stream diversion to fill the lake with water, and drainage of the lake and surrounding plains should the lake flood. This planning study greatly interested me as it was a real world engineering issue and it fueled my interest in engineering. I got a small taste of what I could be involved in after attaining an IPENZ accredited professional engineering degree from the University of Canterbury.

The wide variety of postgraduate study opportunities available after attaining an engineering degree serves as great encouragement to me in contemplating professional engineering as a future career path. Postgraduate study in civil engineering fields such as earthquake engineering and environmental engineering greatly interests me, as do the postgraduate study opportunities in natural resource engineering.

There is great potential and opportunity for New Zealand professional engineering graduates to be involved in work overseas. Graduates, who become members of IPENZ, are entitled to work overseas in places such as Australia, Canada, United States of America, United Kingdom, Europe and South Africa. I have a great desire to travel around the world and have an overseas experience. If I can combine an “O.E” with work overseas as a professional engineer, this would be a perfect opportunity to gain work and life experience at the same time, as well as being able to earn whilst travelling.

I am a student who has a broad interest in engineering, the natural environment and the outdoors and I care about the future of the planet. I have strengths in the subjects of English and Geography which are essential for the communication skills required as an engineer and I also have strengths in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with Calculus. As well as completing bursary in 2003 as a year 12 student, and completing NCEA Level 3 and scholarship examinations in 2004, I also obtained an A in a 100 level Physics paper and an A- in a 100 level Calculus paper at Massey University in 2004, studying from school (Year 13).
