At a 12-, 10-, 8- and 6-day HRT, a significant increase was found in the biogas production rate per litre of digester or per gram of volatile solids added for the screened manure over the unscreened manure. The methane production rate from screened waste (0·50 litre CH4/litre in digester per day, at 6 days HRT) was approximately double that obtained from unscreened slurry for similar retention times. Digester efficiency, measured in terms of percentage reduction of COD, TS and VS, was greatest at 10 and 8 days HRT.
The results support the concept that a liquid-solids separation pretreatment step could significantly reduce the volume of digester required for a farm, without decreasing biogas production.
