reases the genetic diversity within the stand.
The size and shape of the regeneration area has an
impact on biodiversity and on the risk of damage.
The average stand size in the private forests of Finland,
1–3 ha, results in a very high amount of borderline
between stands. The borders form transition zones
between different soil conditions, tree species, and stands
in different age classes. These zones are valuable habitats
for many plants and animals. Delineation of regeneration
areas should be carried out so that the shape of the
compartments and their borders fit in the landscape.
Special emphasis is put on landscape values in places
with high landscape significance.
