I've been practicing Chinese for almost a year now, I would love to have the opportunity to visit China. Despite that, I practice with Chinese people online (I use the app HelloTalk) and sometime practice with native speakers in person, as well as my teacher in class; I learn a lot of grammar tips and vocabulary from them. I would simply say to just meet people and chat with them, they may even give you a helpful correction or tip. When I practice Chinese I like to talk about things I like and can personally relate to, its even better when you can find someone who you can relate with. It's sort of a trial and error, you learn more as you go and have fun at the same time.
I hope this helped. :)
