Queens is a unique borough of New
York City that shares both urban and
suburban features. It has long been a magnet
for migrants and immigrants. Its infrastructural
development stimulated
movements out of other boroughs into
Queens and highways directed the human
traffic into particular locales where ethnic
enclaves emerged. These enclaves later dissolved
due to additional suburbanization
to eastern Queens. And assimilation created
new multicultural neighborhoods in
communities like Bellerose. The hallmark
1965 immigration law created a new,
highly diverse ethnic tapestry, particularly
from Latin America and Asia.
