While we did find that the intervention group had larger decreases in weight, those who did not lose any weight in the intervention group still had a reduction in HbA1c, while those who did not lose weight in the control group saw no reduction. Prior research has shown that resistance training, by increasing muscle mass, can contribute to greater blood glucose uptake. Since our exercise regimen included resistance training, women who experienced no weight loss may have improved muscle mass and thus glycemic control.
