Tourism, however, has grown too rapidly on the island; for example, in the three-year period from 1988 to 1991, the number of star-rated hotel rooms on Bali increased by more than 150 percent, from 1,745 to 4,500. As hotels and support infrastructure have been added so that more and more tourists can visit the island, it has become clear that, Bali cannot continue to grow at such a rapid rate without placing enormous stress on the physical infrastructure and social fabric of the island (C. Hall, 1994, p. 77).
