The transtheoretical model uses
self-efficacy, along with the stages of
changes and processes of change, to
help modify behavior. This theory
helps to match the level of the
intervention to the participant’s readiness
for change and helps to meet people
where they are in the process. Success
with this model is achieved by moving a
person from one level to the next over
time, rather than completely adopting
the behavior change all at once, although
the eventual goal is for participants to
reach the maintenance stage. The stages
of change include precontemplation,
contemplation, preparation, action, and
maintenance (Table 2)
