Abstract
To meet the requirement of the world it has become essential to extract the depleting resources efficiently and effectively. Mechanization of the mining industries is the only option to meet the global competitiveness. Now a day‟s many of the conventional mining processes are backed up with various mechanical and electrical equipments. However, due to lack of care of these equipments, the effective enhancement in productivity is not witnessed. The major material handling device in mining industry is belt conveyor, used for transportation of ore/coal. By proper installation of conveyor structure and perusing total productive maintenance (tpm), 5s and kanban strategies application after installation, we may able to enhance the life of the conveyor system, which directly affect the productivity. Spillage of ore/coal is one of the major cause of failures/break downs of conveyor system. It is loss of production and re-handling cost of this spilled material is additional cost to the customer and termed as waste. Spillage offers resistance to the moving parts of the conveyor system and consequently reduces the life of the rollers, belt conveyors, scrappers, impact rollers, skirting plates, fluid couplings, electric motors etc. Care must be taken to minimize the number of joints in the conveyors. This paper discusses the effect of non-standardized maintenance practices and measures to be implemented to improve the productivity and the life of conveyor system.
