Information on the extent of taungya cultivation in Nigeria is somewhat
fragmentary. Enabor [1974] estimated that at least 24800ha of forest
plantations have been established by taungya up to 1970 while Lowe [1973]
gave an estimate of an annual forest establishment figure of 8000 ha. Olawoye
[1974], considering the total area of forest reserves and assuming that
one percent of this area was being replanted annually under the taungya
system estimated that about 25 000 ha of the forest land should have been
replanted in the rainforest and derived savanna zones at the beginning of
such scheme (around 1970).
