Take a closer look at the center of a sunflower flower head and you will see thousands of tiny blooms. If you were to count them, you would end up with a number between 1,000 and 2,000, according to the University of Missouri Extension. The petals of the sunflower head are also classified as a type of flower. Unlike the flowers in the center, these "flower rays" do not go to seed.
