GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. (WJBK) - It's a farmers market that many have called an obstacle - even racist - because it sits on a road separating Detroit and Grosse Pointe Park.
Now part of it is being moved on Kercheval, but Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said it's not good enough.
The lights are lit in Grosse Pointe Park, but Duggan wants to know why the farmers market shed is still in the middle of the street.
The shed blocks traffic on Kercheval from Detroit.
"I'm tired of the lying and tired of the dishonesty of the Grosse Pointe Park leadership," Duggan said. "They promised the sheds would be gone at the end of November, they promised yesterday that they would be gone today. I think at this point, we're going to have to look at moving to the next step.
"It's obvious we can't trust the Grosse Pointe Park leaders - they don't mean what they say."
Grosse Pointe Park City Council voted to move one of the sheds off of Kercheval from the farmers market.
Duggan says Grosse Pointe Park is not fulfilling their end of the bargain.
"This street has been open for nearly 100 years," Duggan said. "And to have someone through sheds in the middle of a commercial thoroughfare is ridiculous.
"You can see where it's already been run into and damaged, once. We think it's a hazard.
"I was told it would be down today, I can't tell you how disappointed I am to come out here tonight and see that they didn't keep their word."
Some residents say the farmers market was built as a border to keep traffic flowing from Detroit into Kercheval and back and forth.
People around the closed market Friday night have an opinion.
"I've gone to city council meetings before and watched the progress," Grosse Pointe Park resident Carol Bendure said. "And one of the reasons I like living in Grosse Pointe Park is it's proximity to Detroit.
"I spend a lot of time going to Detroit. I have season tickets to the symphony, go to the art institute several times a month, I go to Whole Foods every week so being close to Detroit, to me, is a good thing."
Does Grosse Point Park plan to remove the remaining shed from the market in the middle of Kercheval?
Duggan says he plans to make sure that happens.
