The interdependence mode pertains to the interdependent relationships of individuals (Roy & Andrews, 1999).
Two specific relationships are the focus of this mode. The first relationship involves significant others, the
people who are the most important to individuals. The second is with support systems in which others contribute to meeting the interdependence needs of the individual. The members’ significant relationships include boyfriends, family members, and friends. These individuals contributed to meeting the interdependence needs of these particular members. The group members varied in how important they saw support or having a buddy system in place if they decided to quit smoking. Their responses ranged from such support not mattering to it being very important.
