The FDS of the small finger is variable and is absent in
21% of the population. It is important to note, however,
that when the FDS and FDP are lacerated, it is necessary
to repair both tendons. Advantages of repairing and
maintaining both tendons include maintenance of the
vincular blood supply, retention of a smooth gliding
surface for the FDP, and the reduced possibility of
hyperextension deformities at the PIP joint.
