When asked in the questionnaire whether the descriptors of the Fluency and coherence scale capture
the significant performance qualities at each of the band levels and distinguished adequately between
levels, most examiners reported problems. Bands 6 and 7 were considered difficult to distinguish in
terms of the frequency or amount of hesitation, repetition and/or self-correction. The terms “some”
(Band 7) and “at times” (Band 6) were said to be very similar. One examiner said it was difficult to
infer intentions (“willingness” and “readily”) to discriminate between Bands 6 and 7.
