Symptoms of scombroid fish poisoning resemble the symptoms of food allergy mediated by immunoglobulin E. poisoning begins with neck, and upper part of the arms, with tingle or burning sensation in the mouth, with eruption on the upper body and hypotonia, often followed by headache and itching of the skin. Finally, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may appear. In severe cases, tachycardia, heart palpitation, respiratory distress, and shock may also occur. Commonly, only a part of the enumerated symptoms appear in case of every scombroid poisoning. The poisoning can be diagnosed on the basis of these symptoms,by their quick onset, and by the success of the antihistaminic therapy. The diagnosis is confirmed by the elevated histamine content in the suspicious food measured during some hours.
