The bibliography is divided into five sections: Gift and (Exchange) Programs, Gift Donations
and Acceptance Policies, Gift Processing and Collection Development, Disposal of Unwanted
Gifts, and Gift Appraisals and Tax Laws. Section I, “Gift and Exchange Programs,” contains nine
sources—one monograph, four book chapters, two journal articles, and two Spec Kits—that serve
as overviews of gift and exchange operations. Lane’s Gifts and Exchange Manual, is a very
hands-on guide to policy and procedures for gift and exchange work. Barker, Clark, Magrill and
Corbin, and Magrill and Hickey all penned book chapters, entitled simply “Gifts and Exchanges,”
that deal with many aspects of acquisitions and technical service departments as they relate to gifts
and exchanges. Although the scope of the chapters are essentially the same, each offers unique
information and its own perspective based on the experience of its author. The other four sources
originated from surveys taken of gift and exchange activities in academic libraries: two ARL Spec
Kits, from 1976 and 1985, and two journal articles published by Kovacic (1980) and Leonhardt
(1997). Because these survey findings span two decades, it is interesting to compare the results of
the studies to see the changes that have taken place in the policies and procedures of gifts and
exchanges in libraries.
