Depending upon their chosen level of service,
residents in assisted living communities may
have the following services offered:
› Care management and monitoring
› Help with ADLs
› Housekeeping and laundry
› Medication management
› Recreational activities
› Security
› Transportation
› Two or more meals per day
Some communities, particularly continuing
care retirement communities (CCRC) offering
multiple levels of care from independent
living through nursing home care, also charge
a one-time entrance fee and have additional
fees for items such as meal delivery to living
quarters, dementia care, or extra transportation
services. A growing number of states have
begun covering assisted living costs for those
low-income individuals who qualify through
Medicaid waiver programs, although most
residents pay privately or through a long-term
care insurance policy. Twenty percent of the
communities surveyed are part of a CCRC,
and 1% charge an entrance fee.
