One of the strangest national costumes, worn by Miss Universe Thailand, won the Best National Costume award at yesterday's Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas.
The win forced a Thai netizen to apologise to Aniporn "Nat" Chalermburanawong, the 21-year-old woman from Lampang, for insulting the controversial national costume presented in a Thai tuk tuk concept.
A man using the Facebook account "Supavadee Sittichai" posted on the page yesterday: "I have to apologise to Khun Nat for my post."
His apology came after a number of netizens yesterday swamped his Facebook page with comments, demanding he keep his promise.
The man had previously posted a comment on a news website which had reported on the national costume saying, "If you win an award, I will record a [video] clip showing myself eating dog poop. What a stupid costume."
The winning design, "Tuk-tuk Thailand", was created by Hirankrit Pattaraboriboonkul, 35, an official at the Culture Ministry.
Meanwhile, Miss Philippines was crowned Miss Universe after a live TV mix-up.
The pageant's host, US comedian Steve Harvey, misread his cue card and initially announced Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, had triumphed.
She was fleetingly crowned and congratulated at the ceremony and started waving to fans. But as she blew kisses to the adoring crowd, Harvey was forced to come clean and announce the real Miss Universe winner.
"OK folks, I have to apologise. The first runner up is Colombia."
"Miss Universe 2015 is Philippines," he added as the music began anew, with the actual winner, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach -- an actress and TV host -- looking stunned and mouthing "What?"
The glittering crown was then promptly placed on Wurtzbach's head. She later told reporters she wished Miss Colombia the best.
