Yes, there is a better way BP could have handled accounts making fun of them. One main way they could have prevented this would have been to give them nothing to make fun of. If BP would have addressed the issue as soon as it happened things could have taken a different turn. Instead of having a normal everyday social media presence like most companies, BP chose to create a social media campaign a month prior to the the spill being announced. By doing this, BP was partaking in spin control management. They were doing this in order to distract people from the negative light of the BP disaster. That being said, BP was not focusing on public engagement prior to the spill like they should have been. If BP addressed the spill immediately after it happened, took responsibility, and engaged with those affected and the surrounding community, then the parody accounts would not have any content to make fun of.
