In addition to the AHP, other multicriteria decision approaches include scoring models and
multi-attribute utility theory (MAUT). The advantages of AHP over these alternatives include
the following:
Unlike scoring models, the AHP uses a ratio-scale measurement process that produces
ratio-scale results.
Pair-wise comparisons represent a natural way for eliciting preferences of decision makers
(unlike the use of lotteries in MAUT).
Unlike scoring models and MAUT, the AHP allows some inconsistency in judgments.
Unlike MAUT, the AHP does not require the determination of a measurement function.
The AHP is easy to use—in fact, there are many published accounts of its successful appli-
cation to a variety of decision contexts.
