In addition to the mechanisms previously explained, adsorption
by living or dead microbial biomass may intervene in the decolourization
process in SBBGR. Such phenomenon is a function of the
chemistry of the particular dye and of the microbial biomass
(Robinson et al., 2001): the most easily adsorbed dyes are direct,
basic and disperse dyes (activated sludge removes medium to high
portions of soluble basic and direct dyes, principally by adsorption),
while acid and reactive ones are poorly adsorbed (Delee et al.,1998;
Rozzi et al., 1998; Vandevivere et al., 1998). Higher adsorption
capacity onto viable cells rather than onto dead cells was observed,
but incomplete decolourization was obtained even with very long
contact times (Ledakowicz et al., 2001). As different direct, disperse
and reactive dyes are used in the textile factory from which the
examined wastewater was taken, the quite sparse efficiency in
colour removal observed can be ascribed to the specific composition
of the wastewater stock and to the relative abundance of dyes
from different classes.
