Lesson S&L 13
Task: Call at least one person by name.
Prerequisites: S&L 6
Concept: This lesson can be especially helpful if efforts made to assist the student in going from imitating single words (S&L 6) to independent use of single words (S&L 7) have not been successful. The reason for this is that some form of name use is one of the early expressive (speaking) activities. The teaching technique of this sample lesson is similar to that used for assisting the student in learning independent word use.
Behavioral Objective: When the instructor points to one specific person who is active in the student's life and asks, "Who is this?" the student will respond with the first name of that person to a 90% accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: None.
Task Analysis:
1. Capitalize on the student's ability to imitate words (S&L 6), by pointing to specific people common to the student's environment and requesting imitation of each person's name.
2. Expand the concept of Step 1 by placing the phrase, "Who is this?" immediately in front of the name of the person being indicated. Prompt the student to imitate only the name portion of the person identified.
3. Continue Step 2, omitting the last syllable of the name if the name is more than one syllable or the last sound if the name has only one syllable.
4. Continue the concept of Step 3 until only the phrase, "Who is this?" is needed to identify at least one person.
5. Although the objective is met upon completion of Step 4, a good continuation of this process would be to prompt the student to answer with his or her own name when asked, "And who are you?"
