At a wavelength of 450 nm, the ratios of extinction coefficients of the α and γcarotenes to the extinction coefficient of βcarotene are 1.04 and 1.06, respectively [16]; i.e., they are very similar. For this reason, the fraction of each carotenoid (including βcarotene)can be determined as the specific area of the peak related to the given compound at the chromatographic separation of their mixture. During the determination of areas of badly resolved peaks, the boundary between them was assumed to be the intersection point of their profiles, which represents the minimum on the dependence curve of the signal of the detector (absorption)vs. time. The relative error in the conduction of three parallel experiments was less than 8%.
