There are five main steps to solving a problem and you as the teacher should display these in your classroom and reinforce them with your learners so they have a method for developing their problem solving skills.
Problem Orientation – Recognition that a problem exists and that solving it is worthwhile is the starting point for all problem solving.
Problem Definition – Analyzing the problem to identify its depth and importance. Why is it a problem? Is it the real problem or a part of a bigger picture? Why is it a problem specifically for you?
Looking at Solutions- You need to ask what has worked in the past and are there a number of options to solve the problem. Think of all the possibilities and choose possible plans of attack.
Decision Making – Make a decision as to which problem solving option you will use and examine what the possible positive and negative consequences might be.
Solving The Problem – Implement your solution and give it your best effort. Be confident and persistent but also be flexible with any changes you may need to make. Evaluate how the problem was solved or why you need to rethink.
