Fauvism & Expressionism
Fauvism emphasised vibrant colours and painterly qualities over the realistic style favoured by the impressionists. They achieved this by using heavy brush strokes and being unconstrained by actual colours and tones. Like Fauvism, Expressionism rejected realism and the impressionists, especially their strict observations of nature. They instead tried to express the destruction of genuine emotion by society, and they did so by trying to simplify and liberate colour.
