As I prepare for the return of my students in two days. . .
. . . may I never forget how utterly priceless my own education has been to me-- how many doors it has opened; how many worlds it has revealed, against what great odds; how many people have had to believe in me (even when I was incorrogible, seemingly disinterested, and did not believe in myself) in order for it to utlimately unfold; how lucky I have been to have received the gifts that have come with deep literacy and with the gift of special others' belief in me as a human being with the potential to do what I have always so deeply wanted-- to make a difference in this world, however small.
My deepest wish is to be worthy to pass these gifts on. May it be so.
