An analysis of major disasters over the period 1970 to 1995 shows that the number of natural as well as man-made catastrophes is clearly increasing. Man-made disasters include major fires and explosions, aviation and shipping disasters, road and rail disasters as well as acts of terrorism and social disturbances. As regards natural catastrophes, storms and earthquakes cause the greatest amount of losses, followed by floods The recent increase in the number of severe storms is being closely observed by climate researchers as well as by the insurance industry.
