Due to high CO2 emissions, such investors must purchase more
carbon certificates than coal-fired thermal power plant investors to
balance their carbon emissions, which would be tragic for this
sector in Turkey. Currently, this sector is fortunate because the
gases released from geothermal power plants are pure and do not
contain such pollutants as ash and dust. These gases are released
from condenser inlets in steam turbine plants and from heat exchangers
in binary plants. Therefore, the geothermal power plants
can be operate with zero emissions if gas emissions can be dissolved
into hot water (80e125 C) at the outlet of the plant and reinjected
into the reservoir. Although they are less efficient units,
binary plants can produce much more net power than steam turbines
under specific circumstances, which is another factor that
should be considered by investors in Turkey, where the geothermal
fields contain high levels of NCG.
