Most young children put forth effort for the simple joy of learning but as they grow older, they are no longer motivated by the love of learning or the prospect of discovering something new and are more likely to be motivation by grades [Holmes & Wynne,1989]. Student who value approval implied by high grades are inclined to work hard to achieve them, but student who internalize the negative judgments implied by low grades lose motivation when they receive a marginal or failing grade [Sincalir & Ghory, 1987]. Practices that are likely to cause a loss of motivation are using grades as punishment –such as when a teacher lowers a child’s grade for being late or talking put of turn-and the curve, which damages morale by forcing student to compete whit one another for high grades [Guskey,1994]
