Former Leicester City striker James Scrowcroft believes Claudio Ranieri will be up against it this season after the Italian was appointed as the new Foxes manager.
The ex-Chelsea, Juventus, Roma and Monaco chief replaces Nigel Pearson, who left the King Power Stadium earlier this summer, but has not been involved in the Premier League since his time at Stamford Bridge more than 10 years ago.
And Scowcroft admits the Italian’s appointment took him by surprise, especially with former Foxes and current Republic of Ireland boss Martin O’Neill favourite to take the helm.
“It’s a bolt out the blue, nobody expected it,” he told Drivetime.
“The rumour was Martin O’Neill and you put two and two together and expect that to happen.
“He’s up against it, I think they needed someone like O’Neill – it’ll only be a good appointment if he’s backed in the transfer window because Nigel did produce a miracle.
“At the end of the day it’s all about results, if he gets them he’ll be popular but if he doesn’t he won’t be – you have to give him time but it’ll be a tough season, especially based on last year.”
