. In our zero-waste model, off-quality or excess agri
cultural products are diverted to an energy production system where
the carbohydrates and other nutrients are scavenged by microorgan-
isms (e.g., algae including C. protothecoides) and converted to high
value products, such as oil for biodiesel production and high protein animal feeds. Agricultural producers benefit from an additional revenue
stream for off-grade or overripe products, and the local economy additionally benefits from locally produced and diversified sources of biofuel
and animal feed.
