Statement of Purpose
Having done an inspiring four-year course in Electrical Engineering, combined with two years of
practical experience in Road Traffic Control and Navigational Aids Radio Systems at ABC (Thailand), I
would like to put to use this knowledge to do my Masters in Communications and Computer Networks
Engineering (CoCNE) at the University of Zurich. This would give me the leading edge in technology
and the practical low-down and information I require. For this, research would be of prime importance
with hands on experience in real time applications accompanied by in-depth knowledge of the subject.
The days of my undergraduate study at XYZ University helped me to get sound knowledge and firm
grasps over the underlying principles of subjects like Digital Communication Systems, Communication
Electronics, Data Communication, and Computer Systems, and has equipped me with the necessary
prerequisites for a formal graduate course. In the last semester I got the chance to pursue a project related
to Artificial Intelligent (AI). In this project, I worked on the implementation of AI using Object Oriented
Programming, C++, for soccer robots. The basic idea was to implement AI rules in C++ which are
associated with the directional control unit of the robot. I gained a lot from this project. The more tangible
benefits have been a deeper insight into architecture and working of microprocessor and thorough C/C++
programming skills.
During my first job as a Traffic Radar Engineer at ABC (Thailand), I acquired a great deal of knowledge
about Ground Traffic Control Systems, Navigation Aids, functionalities/architectures, and their
controlling methodologies. I attended a series of trainings and workshops focusing on the underlying
communications and radar theories as well as the practical use of these systems. In addition, I was
responsible for the overall implementation, installation, and maintenance of two major road traffic control
radio systems. Working on these projects has helped me understand for the first time how the optimal
signal processing theory in conjunction with the concept of reliable computer networks are applied for
critical missions like road traffic control systems and navigation aids. I also developed an appreciation of
the “big picture”, and conversely how important the details are. As the electrical and electronics
industries, in particular Telecommunications, are areas in which development has always been rapid, I
have always strive hard to keep myself abreast of the latest trends by going through the top IEEE journals
like IEEE Transactions on Communications, and IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing.
I wish to earn MSc degree in Communications and Compute Networks and intend to follow this up with a
doctoral degree, and later a career in research and development. After having done a research in the
CoCNE website and discussed with my professors and colleagues about my choice of University, I have
no doubt that CoCNE is the appropriate place to pursue my further studies, since it will provide me not
only an opportunity to attend classes and laboratories that are taught by well qualified professors and
professionally qualified instructors with rich industrial research and consultancy experiences, but also the
soft-skills that will be needed to become an outstanding researcher in the field. CoCNE’s close links with
industry and extensive research links with companies will enable me to apply the knowledge and theory
to the real practices through the project works. CoCNE’s focus on a corporate project will enable me to
put my knowledge into a direct practice as well as to develop professional contacts for future employment
in the world marketplace. My carefully planned career path and professional/personal experiences in
combination with CoCNE will ensure that I am successful in my next career.
My background will also add to the diversity of the CoCNE class. I am eager to gain exposure to a
diverse and international group of CoCNE classmates, as well as their insight on the industries in which
they have worked. I look forward to sharing my experience and a dynamic classroom environment with
them. It would be a great pleasure and honor for me if given a chance to pursue my graduate studies at the
University of Zurich. If given an opportunity to do master's, I assure that my work would not fall short of
your expectations. I hope that you will find in me a deserving and creditable student for CoCNE.
