Devices do not cure epilepsy, but they may help to control otherwise refractory seizures.
This overview will briefly summarize selected therapeutic devices being investigated as
treatment for epilepsy. The review will not cover diagnostic devices related to EEG, MRI or
PET scans, chemical delivery vehicles for drugs, gene therapy or radiation therapy, nor will
it attempt to be comprehensive. With the exception of the vagus nerve stimulator, none of
the devices discussed in this article are presently approved for use in the United States.
