COMMON OXYGEN DELIVERY TECHNIQUE
Head Hood
Head Hoods or boxes (Figure 1) are designed to increase the oxygen concentration of the gas mixture around the infan’s head. Several hood designs exist, with different sizes, potential ports for monitoring gas content, temperature, and access points to the infant. The inspired oxygen content within the hood depends on both the flow and the oxygen concentration of the gas delivered to the hood. If the flow rate of the gas is low, less of the delivered oxygen will be available to the infant because infiltration of environmental gas (21 percent oxygen) will dilute the gas content of the hood. Reducing the amount of room air that contaminates the gas in the hood (by positioning the hood to increase its contact with the bedding, for instance) reduces this problem. Care must be taken, however, to ensure that adequate carbon dioxide washout occurs in the hood. This necessitates some leakage of gas to the environment, so the hood cannot be totally sealed. Higher gas flows also help to wash out the exhaled carbon dioxide.
