The ideal minimum isolation distance for commercial seed production is
1000 m, although some seed regulatory authorities specify distances of only
500 m.
The different groups of melons within Cucmis melo are all cross-compatible.
It is, therefore, extremely important that there is adequate isolation
between commercial or garden crops grown only for fruit and crops intended
primarily for seed production.
The melons in the different groups of Cucumis melo do not cross-pollinate
with the watermelons (Citrullus lanatus), nor do they produce viable seeds if
cross-pollinated with the cucumbers (Cucumis sativus).
