In addition to serum examinations, imaging can be helpful for diagnosis. Chest X-ray is usually the only radiological survey included in the initial work-up.19 Computed tomography is also a helpful diagnostic tool in children with localized diseases, however, it has a relatively lower yield.20 Positron emission tomography with F-fluorodeoxyglucose plays a role in the distinction between scarring or fibrosis and active tumors.21, 22, 23 In the current study, none of the patients achieved a final diagnosis via nuclear medicine imaging or positron emission tomography studies, which is similar to previous studies.24
For prognosis, in previous studies patients have been observed clinically for progression of illness if there were no positive findings.25 More than 80% of reported cases have not had a serious illness after a median follow up of 3.5 years.26, 27, 28
